(English)On Saturday 13 June, Team Boskalis De Koning/Visser won the Zwitserleven Sailing Week 2009 (overall Zwitserleven Open Dutch Championship). The duo managed to be in the lead of the fleet under variable circumstances, both during the sometimes windy Texel Dutch Open and the tactical Round Texel. The overall win of the Zwitserleven Round Texel goes to the British F18 team Wilson/Lynch in their new F18 Shockwave. Their compatriots William Sunnucks and Simon Farren received a warm welcome when they arrived at the sunny beach, after they were the first to cross the finish in their extra wide M20.

Slightly surprised, the winners come from the water. “It went well; good boat, good crew and good sails”, says the Brit Rob Wilson, “but you never know if there will be an A-cat passing by in the overall rankings”. And indeed, one and a half hours later, the local islander Dirk Pool gave everyone a surprise. Because his Prindle 15 isn't too fast, the solo sailor ranked second overall after rating. Pool: “I was tired of it when the wind died out, but I happen to be a fighter, so I don't give up before I reach the end.” The big winners of the Zwitserleven Sailing Week are ruling F18 World Champion Coen de Koning (NED) and his new crew Thijs Visser (NED). The winners of the line honours, William Sunnucks and Simon Farren are delighted. Sunnucks: “We tried something different and it worked out. That's very satisfying.”

In spite of the lack of wind, the start of the Zwitserleven Round Texel was extremely exciting. After the sailors had conquered the mountainous surf, they had great trouble to arrive at the south of the starting line in time. The current pushed them to the north. At about 10 minutes before the start, such a big number of cats was still at the wrong side of the starting line, that the racing committee decided to move the starting vessel. In the end, about 350 boats managed to cross the line in time.

With Xander Pols and Tjiddo Veenstra in the lead, the fleet sailed under gennaker to the lighthouse on the northern point of the island. Rob Wilson: “We first chose the seaside, but soon found out that that wasn't a good idea, so we tacked back to the shore.” Team Pols/Veenstra first passed the gate, followed by the Australians Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby (silver medallists in the Tornado at the 2008 Olympics), but then the wind faded in the lead, and the fleet bunched up again. A few fast boats managed to get away thanks to a gust of wind, but most of them just floated about. Coen de Koning: “We even had to sail upwind to the buoy again, because the current had pushed us away. We stayed put for about five minutes, as if we were anchoring.”
F18's overtaking
After rounding the VC buoy east of the island, a few F18's start overtaking the rest. Rob Wilson: “We made a few good tacks. Also by paying attention to Mitch Booth, who has done the Round many times before.” His crew, Marc Lynch, adds that their F18 Shockwave, which was designed last year by Yves Loday (Olympic Tornado champion 1992), performs very well upwind. After the rounding of the south cape, Team De Koning/Visser closes in. De Koning: “We were sailing at the open sea, but it didn't work, so we were one of the boats to turn to the coast. We gained a lot by sailing very close to the surf, and jibing a lot. It was great.” Meanwhile, two M20's were fighting their own battle. When the wind increased, Team Pols/Veenstra, which led the fleet most of the race, had to let William Sunnucks and Simon Farren pass. The Brits could sail their extra wide M20 at full power under the heavier conditions. They finished first after 5 hours, 15 minutes and 19 seconds.

For Dirk Pool from Texel, the last leg was hardly bearable. Pool: “The wind died out and the current was against me.” By sailing in the exact opposite direction of the stream, he managed to minimise its effect. Eventually he got some puff after all, and his effort of 7 hours and 20 minutes was rewarded with a podium place.
Slalom Windsurfing Worlds:
Bernd Flessner triumphs Even though the wind surfers could not sail any races the last day, it was a successful and valid event with five elimination rounds. The German Bernd Flessner, who took the lead on day one, said with great enthusiasm: “It's been years since we sailed a Slalom under such circumstances. With side shore winds and buoys in the surf, this is a dream come true.” The last day, the wind surfers couldn't sail any races, which means yesterday's results did not change; Bernd Flessner was the convincing winner.

(NED)Op zaterdag 13 juni won het Team Boskalis De Koning/Visser de Zwitserleven Zeilweek 2009. Het duo zeilde onder alle omstandigheden, zowel tijdens het soms winderige Texel Dutch Open als de tactische Ronde om Texel, in de kopgroep. De overall winst van de Zwitserleven Ronde om Texel gaat naar het Britse F18 team Wilson/Lynch in zijn nieuwe F18 Shockwave. Landgenoten William Sunnucks en Simon Farren kregen een warm onthaald door de menigte op het zonnige strand, nadat ze met hun extra brede M20 als eerste over de finish gingen. De wereldtitel slalom windsurfen ging naar Bernd Flessner en de Nederlander Jacques van der Hout pakte zilver.

Enigszins verrast komen de winnaars het water af. "Het ging prima; goede boot, goede bemanning en goede zeilen", zegt de Brit Rob Wilson, "maar je weet nooit of er nog een A-cat voorbij komt zetten in het klassement". En inderdaad, anderhalf uur later zorgt Texelaar Dirk Pool nog voor een verrassing. Omdat zijn Prindle 15 niet zo hard gaat, belandt de solozeiler na correctie op een tweede plaats in het overall klassement. Pool: "Ik was het spuugzat toen de wind helemaal wegzakte, maar ik ben nou eenmaal een vechter, dus ik geef niet op tot ik er ben." De grote winnaars van de Zwitserleven Zeilweek zijn regerend F18 kampioen Coen de Koning en zijn nieuwe bemanning Thijs Visser.

De start van de Zwitserleven Ronde om Texel was ondanks het gebrek aan wind bijzonder spannend. Nadat de zeilers de heftige branding hadden bedwongen, kostte het ze grote moeite op tijd ten zuiden van de startlijn te komen. De stroming drukte ze naar het noorden. Op tien minuten voor de start lagen er nog zoveel cats aan de verkeerde kant, dat de wedstrijdleiding besloot het startschip een flink stuk te verplaatsen. Uiteindelijk lukte het zo'n 350 boten op tijd over de lijn te gaan.

Met Xander Pols en Tjiddo Veenstra aan kop voer de vloot onder gennaker naar de vuurtoren op de noordpunt van het eiland. Rob Wilson: "We gingen eerst de zee op, maar kwamen er al snel achter dat dat niet voordelig was, dus toen zijn we teruggeklapt. Team Pols/Veenstra gaat als eerste door de gate, gevolgd door de Australiërs Darren Bundock en Glenn Ashby (zilveren medaillewinnaars in de Tornado bij de Spelen van 2008), maar dan valt de wind voorin weg en zakt het hele veld in elkaar. Een paar boten wisten dankzij een vlaag goed weg te komen, maar de hoofdmoot bleef liggen. Coen de Koning: "We moesten zelfs terugkruisen naar de gate en vervolgens hebben we daar echt een kwartier stilgelegen. Alsof we voor anker lagen."
Inhaalslag F18's
Na de ronding van de VC boei ten oosten van het eiland, beginnen een paar F18's aan een inhaalslag. Rob Wilson: "We hebben bij de ferry een paar goede slagen gemaakt. Ook door goed op Mitch Booth te letten, die het rondje al een paar keer gevaren heeft." Zijn bemanning Marcus Lynch vertelt dat hun vorig jaar ontworpen F18 Shockwave, naar ontwerp van Yves Loday (olympisch Tornadokampioen 1992), ook erg goed aan de wind gaat. Na de ronding van de zuidpunt komt Team De Koning/Visser steeds dichterbij: "Toen begon onze downwind inhaalrace. We merkten dat het op zee lastig ging. Op dat moment besloten we als een van de eersten om terug naar de kust te gaan. Doorvaren tot vlak voor de branding en vaak gijpen leverde ons veel winst op. Het ging super."
